Deirdre says, “Maybe we can help each other, sir. Do you have any food or water to spare? We’ve been walking all day with no supplies, but we’d be happy to make your delivery with a bite and a drink.” She rolls Speech, and the old man is willing to share.
“I’ve got a sandwich and my canteen in my pack, but the canteen’s half empty. I need some for the journey home, but I’m willing to share what I’ve got.”
“That’ll do nicely, sir,” Deirdre says. “And thank you for your generosity. We’ll make sure your package gets where it’s going.”
“Oh, thank you,” the old man says, sighing with relief. “It’s for my daughter, Yvonne. She lives down the road in Noob Town,” and he points along one path from the crossroads. “Just tell a guard you’re looking for Yvonne, to deliver Vincent’s yearly care package to her. Surely they’ll get you the rest of the way.”
“Got it,” Dale says. “Yvonne, daughter of Vincent, yearly care package. Now what’s in it for us?”
Vincent asks, “I’m sorry?” He looks confused and a bit affronted.
“You know - money, XP, what do we get out of this fetch quest?”
“Dale,” Deirdre says in a scolding tone, “Don’t metagame with the NPCs!”
“Empty seas,” Vincent asks, a little more confused and a little less offended. “I don’t know what you’re-”
“Look, dude,” Dale says, cutting off the old man, “I’m just trying to get a feel for how things work. It’s not like I made the world or anything.”
“I don’t understand,” Vincent says, suddenly skeptical of this whole thing. “You two looked trustworthy, with your jaunty outfits and fresh faces, but now I’m not so sure.”
“No, we’ll do it,” Deirdre says, rolling Speech to redirect the conversation. “We’re just from out of town, it’s a slang thing, sorry for the confusion.”
“It’s a basic question,” Dale says, failing a Gentility roll. “I just wanted to know-”
“HEY! LISTEN!” Vincent is suddenly angry and loud as he yells at the teens. “I don’t have all day to sit here and yammer on, so just take this noob shit to Noob Town, you fuckin’ noobs!”
“Oh, fuck this guy,” Dale says, rolling 20 for turn order, drawing one of his blasters, and shooting the old man before Deirdre and Vincent have even registered what’s happening.
