This is the final design, the process is below the cut.
I started with what I wanted her armor to look like in real life, and I decided to use an old photo of Samantha Swords. (I should note for clarity that he's a trans man who still goes by Samantha, but this photo is from back when he presented as female and was a go-to example for badass women. This photo in particular was a staple in the "realistic armor for women" movement.) I started by tracing a sketch on top of it:
As usual, you can click for huge. (Photo by Rey Alabastro Photography.)
Most of the time I was working on it, I had both layers' transparency turned down; and then I turned them down some more to sketch Pan on another layer. There were alterations like her head, and simplifications like removing the satchel & sword (since I already know what Hawkmoth looks like and don't need to see how it looks):
Then I roughed in the colors, and added some shading:
With highlights, the sketch is complete!
Next, I needed to simplify it for the book. I made another sketch on paper with my tabby nearby for reference, then imported a photo and digitized the lines:
After that, more coloring! I imported the color rough for reference, then did the shading and highlights.
And finally, a little magic:
I'm not entirely happy with it. I mean, I like the look, I just need to let it simmer and see it with fresh eyes later. Anyway, that's it for this weekend. See you Tuesday!
P.S. - In the time between drafting this post and publishing it, I went and did a version in the outfit from Chapter 21. Ta-da!
I don't know how I feel about those eyelashes, but the lips look good!
